ADOLESCENT DRUG USE IN THE U.S

Adolescent Drug Use in the U.S

Introduction and Justification

Tobacco, illegal material and alcohol addictions, cost millions of dollars per year to American government with respect to the economic, social , criminal and medical impact. More than a 100,000 people die in America due to the usage of alcohol and illicit drugs every year. (McKim, 2003)Approximately, 440,000 deaths every year are connected to the intake of tobacco in America. Thus, studying the drug usage and addiction is very important. Drug abusers need to be identified and counseled so that they are able to come out of their addiction. (Liddle, 2006)

Adolescents are highly exposed to the harmful alcohol or drug abuse. Many risks such as, violence, unplanned pregnancies, infectious diseases and injurious health effects are linked with the teenage drug abuse. Adolescent drug addicts have issues while remembering and paying attention as they lose concentration. Therefore, there social relationships suffer and work performance decrease because of this drug abuse. The research is important because recently there has been observed a significant increase in the prescription of non-medical drugs that is used by the adolescent. Earlier literature has not so much emphasized on the usage of illicit drugs, specifically, marijuana. (Bartecchi, 1995)

Marijuana is one of the most popular and commonly used illicit drugs among the youngster of United States. The stats show the currently cocaine usage increased from two percent to four percent in the 2001 and then dropped down from 4 percent to 3 percent by the end of 2009.

Purpose:

This research has been carried out in order to understand the way drugs have been affecting the adolscents.

This research will help the performance of different students have been evaluated to get results of to the extent it is effecting the students and teenagers and what is the performance of students who do not take drugs.

Methodology

Quantitative Method

This research approached data gathering using the quantitative methods. Basically, the quantitative approach pursues facts and is employed when researchers desire to acquire statistical truth. According to Gall, Gall and Borg (2003), quantitative research assumes that the social environment has objective reality that is relatively constant across time and settings.

The quantitative approach is to explain and describe characteristics of the goal reality by the collection of numerical data on observable behaviors of samples and by subjecting these data to statistical analysis. The research itself must be expressed by digits that are accepted universally. In this approach, in order to make generalized idea, purpose of the research is emphasized by using neutral scientific language.

In Creswell's (2001) explanation, quantitative researches are based on post-positivist claims for developing knowledge, use surveys and experiments, and collecting data on predetermined instruments that yield statistical data.

One of the major benefits of employing quantitative research approach points to generalized idea because the research results are derived by discovering exact facts, the same research methods and the results can be generalized.
