Efficiency in Accident and emergency Departments of Heartlands Hospital

Introduction to Heatherlands Medical Centre

Heatherlands Medical Centre came about as an amalgamation of two single handed practices on the Beechwood and Woodchurch estates. Dr Camphor was single handed at Fenderway Heath Centre for four years after being in partnership with Dr D.H.Williams who retired in 1996. The other site was situated at Kiln Road Woodchurch from where Dr Singh was working. Dr Singh retired in 1998, Dr Camphor inherited the list in 1999 when he took on two new partners, Dr Roohi and Dr Bains. The Practice then moved to the New purpose built building called Heatherlands Medical centre on the 31/7/2000.

The practice is a partnership of one full time male doctor and two part time female doctors leading a team of Primary health care staff including Practice Nurses, District Nurses, Health Visitors and, Comunity Midwives, Comunity Psychiatric Nurses, Physiotherapist and Chiropody supported by a Practice Manager with a Secretary and five Receptionists.

The aim of this audit was to determine the nature and outcome of GP referrals to the A&E Department. We assessed the urgency of these referrals and analyzed patient demographics, reason for referral, diagnosis and management plan. Trust is seen as an expression of confidence between partners when making exchange or other relationship, as the idea that the partner negotiations do not exploit the vulnerability of the other or the willingness to trust the partner for the terms of trade as. In our case the patient's confidence is defined as patient's expectations that the ED is safe and can rely on their promises (Merton 1957, 79).
