Acceptability of Behavioral and Pharmacology Treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children

Abstract

This paper is about the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in relations to children characteristics Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common behavioral disturbance in children. It is a broad term that is used to describe a cluster of symptoms that comprise a neuro developmental disorder in which the child struggles to control impulses, manage behavior, and listen to directions. A specific cause of ADHD is still unknown. There are however a number of factors that may contribute to birth or to exacerbate ADHD, which includes genetic factors and social conditions. Inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity are key symptoms in the behavior of people affected by ADHD. Further, assessment of ADHD must include information like the referent, the length of time there has been a problem, and the circumstances around the symptoms of ADHD. The first-line treatment of ADHD is the prescription of stimulant drugs such as methylphenidate or dexamphetamine. However, this pharmacological intervention does not agree with every child and many children also experience distressing side effects from these medications. The other primary ways to control ADHD include the Behavioral management, Diet, Medication, Counseling. Children with ADHD often benefit from behavior therapy or counseling, which may be provided by a psychologist, psychiatrist or a social worker.

Acceptability of Behavioral and Pharmacology Treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children

Introduction

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a behavioral disorder characterized by inattention, impulsivity and motor hyperactivity that makes it difficult and in some cases prevents the normal development and social integration of children. (Catherine A., Susanna N. and Carla P., 2003) This is a complex and heterogeneous disorder. It is multi-factorial in 70-80% of cases coexists with one or more other disorders (a phenomenon called co-morbidity). The coexistence of more serious disorders symptoms complicates both diagnosis and therapy (Barkley, 2006). They are most frequently associated with oppositional-defiant disorder and conduct disorder, specific learning disorders etc. The standardization and hyperactive behavior in some patients with deficits in attention have been effective along with behavioral therapies, lifestyle changes, clinical and, psychological interventions. Approximately 50% of families of children with ADHD fail to pursue, or adhere to, recommended treatments.

This paper will discuss about the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in relations to children characteristics. It will include causes of ADHD, Symptoms of ADHD, and assessment of ADHD. Further, it will explain acceptability of behavioral and pharmacology treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity in children along with implications of a social worker considering micro, mezzo and macro systems.
