Qualitative Research Design and Approach

Qualitative research methods are the most appropriate and best capture the process and meaning of a social responsibility image. Cassell and Symon's (2004) definition of a qualitative study supports this approach.

Qualitative research defining characteristics includes:

Its focus is on interpretation rather on qualification

Its highlights subjectivity rather than objectivity

It has flexibility for the process of gathering the research data

Its emphasize on orientation process rather than outcome

Qualitative research method has an explicit recognition impact on the research process and situation.

As a corporation builds and manages a social responsibility image, it produces a complex web of interactions and processes that can be best illustrated and understood with qualitative data. A qualitative approach ensures the flexibility desired at the early stages of theory formation (Salmon, 2000).

A final rationale for the case study approach is that it has been the dominant method used in prior studies of impression management strategies at the organizational level of analysis and for the study of exemplary organizations. In the impression management literature, Dutton and Dukerich (2009) employed a single case study, whereas Sutton and Callahan (2007) and Elsbach and Sutton (2002) applied case study approaches, all yielding significant results. Yin (2003) and Ginsburg (2009) cite the importance of the case study methodology when investigating exemplary cases.

Research Question

The central research question of a study tells the reader what the researcher is trying to learn from the study (Creswell, 2008). In qualitative research, interrogatories such as “what” and “how” are generally used in posing the central question because they tend to generate responses that are unique to the individual experiences of the respondent (Creswell, 2008).

Participants

The participants of this study is selected for a solicit interview from HIM faculty members of the selected university. The Students of HIM are selected as the participants of this study.

Data Collection

Saunders et al. (2000) defined focus group as a specific type of group with specific purpose to listen and gather information. Focus group will be conducted with distance learning students.
