He accepts as factual that he should not be premier his men. “…He could not convey himself to concern about affairs of security. He was after that. He was just a child at conflict, in love.” Jimmy is in love with Martha, a young female back home. He carries her letters. Jimmy furthermore carries the heaviness of order and the blame for his men's lives. After one of his men passes away the scribe composes this. “Lieutenant Cross sensed the pain.
