The Democratic Party was in disarray in 1860 when they convened in Charleston, South Carolina to select their presidential candidate. Southern components asserted that the nominating conference make a powerful declaration carrying slavery in the territories. Western components, although, are against that stance and contended for an endorsement of well liked sovereignty. The last cited place prevailed and the Southern delegates strolled out.

Following the aggression in "Bleeding Kansas," Douglas had lost much support inside the party; although, he had reclaimed his prominence by condemning Buchanan and the Lecompton constitution in 1858.
