10 Coaching Evaluations and Reflective Review

Based on the experiences we gain during our routine lives, we make a number of decisions. These decisions dictate our very actions, as they become the driving force behind our approach to dealing with our day to day issues. However, it is not necessary that the experience we have gained from a particular encounter would always be in favour of our current lifestyles and situations. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the link between the conclusions we draw from our experiences and its relevance and role in our future life experiences. This paper aims to conduct a reflective review of the placement centre that I worked for (Harrow Leisure Centre). Included within this review are general, self-assessment as well as classroom reflections regarding my personal learning and enrichment. These are supported by 10 lesson evaluations which have been provided in the appendix.

General Reflections on the Education

The type of learning that is going on at Harrow Leisure Centre is learning through leisure and sports, which is basically recreational learning. This is a (comparatively) newer form of teaching, and is based on cognitive learning, as it engages many parts of the brain. Recreational learning is basically learning driven by personal interests; hobbies are seen as a form of learning and enriching oneself. Harrow Leisure Centre offers a number of sports and leisure activities and facilities such as a fitness centre, personal trainers for guidance, swimming pools, climbing walls, sports halls, treatment room, squash courts, café, dance studios, function suites, table tennis, adventure world soft play, and crèche (Lyle 2002, p.59).

The learning is basically targeted at adults who sign up as a member for the activities/classes. A number of memberships are offered to adults, such as the prepaid and pay & play ones. These individuals are usually ones who are not engaged in any mode of formal education that might be consuming their time.

I was placed at Harrow Leisure Centre as a fitness instructor. My job was to teach people the correct way of using exercise equipment, to keep an eye on any such misuse of equipment. I also had to make sure that the gym remained clean and safe for the users, to teach them the methods of exercising through various workshops and classes, and also to recommend suitable diet plans for people who required them.

Located in the suburban outskirts of Charing Cross, London, Harrow is a peaceful town. The people over there are usually busy people, living the fast paced lives. During my placement at the leisure centre, I had to encounter all sorts of people - from young, health conscious teenagers, to middle-aged working folks, to older individuals who were concerned regarding their health. Teaching them increased my exposure to a diverse range of people as I had direct contact with them (Capel, Leask, & Turner 2005, ...
