The movie was written by Paul Baumer, a nineteen year vintage scholar, convinced to recruit with the German army by his schoolmaster, Kantorek. Along with numerous of his associates from school, he is taught under Corporal Katczinsky, a firmly well controlled commander who dislikes Paul because of his "defiance."
