Why Don't People Help in a Crisis?

Introduction

Aristotle called human a social animal. This means that he cannot live is isolation from others of his kind. When humans live together, some responsibilities also rest on their shoulders. One of the most primary responsibility is that human beings need to take care of each other. They need to help each other out in inopportune times and difficulties. It is important that they help each other so that they also get help of others when they face stressful situations. This essay is written to under, stand the behavior of human beings in emergency situations. Factors which affect their behavior, as well as, the psychological factors are also included in the paper.

Discussion

John M. Darley and Bibb Latane were two psychologists who worked on the behavior of human beings in emergency situations. They conducted a research on the human behavior in emergency situations and presented their findings in a paper named, Why do not People Help? They put the subjects to some experiments (Latane, Darley, 1970, pp. 126). In the first experiment that they conducted, some people were made to sit in a room. They were given written surveys, and while they were completing them, the room was filled with smoke. In another experiment to study the human behavior in emergency situations, the subjects of the experiment heard a loud noise of crashing form one of the adjoining rooms. The noise followed the voice of a woman screaming for help (Latane, Rodin, 1969, pp.189-202). In another experiment, the subjects of the experiment were having a conversation over the intercom when they heard one of the subjects choking and asking for help.
