What is a Cartoon?

Introduction

Cartoon is also known as a 2D animation. It is the animation which is drawn by hands, and each character drawn has its unique significance. Cartoon is the oldest and the most traditional animation which is being followed since ages. Animation is made by filling multiple images, and it gives a continuous movement. Cartoons are the first thing that one reads when they open magazines or newspaper. The print ads which people see are also a form of a cartoon, as it is an animated series. Cartoon is the most powerful form of communication, as people show their interest in the print ads which are animated. They find ads funny and interesting if they are in the form of a cartoon. It is the most common part of the American culture. According to the Webster definition of cartoon, “Cartoon is a drawing, as in a newspaper or magazine, caricaturing or symbolizing, often satirically, some action, situation or person of topical interest.” Thomas Nast is the father of cartooning (Mankoff, pp. 36-38). All other cartoonists are the followers of Thomas Nast. Mort Gerberg is one of the well known cartoonists who mostly focus on the political side. Political cartoons play a vital role in creating awareness among the public, and to the political leaders as, well. Leaders should know that how people of their country are suffering, and they are not bothered by it. In this essay I will be analyzing a editorial cartoon on the perspective of Mort Gerberg essay “What is a Cartoon”, which can be shown beautifully through cartoons, especially political cartoons.

Mort Gerberg

Mort Gerberg is an American cartoonist. His work is popular, and accepted in The New Yorker, Playboy. His work is published weekly in many magazines. He is not only the cartoonist, but he is also an author, and editor of 40 books, which has mainly focused on adults and children including the textbooks of cartooning. His most famous textbook of cartooning was, “Cartooning: The Art and the Business”; “More Spaghetti, I Say.” He later started working on political cartoon, so that people can get aware of the reality (Gerberg, pp. 93-96). His motive was to create awareness in the public and in the political leaders, so that they know what exactly is going on in the country, and how badly people are suffering. Creating this awareness is very essential as it is the public who can bring change in the political conditions by demanding their needs for the peaceful development of the country. His political cartoon work is appreciated all around the world, as people can associate them with the story board. The humor which he adds in his cartoons, is another reason for the popularity.
