Introduction

Watergate is a term which is related to the history of American politics and refers to the scandal and series of events that took place between the period of year 1972 to 1974. Watergate is basically a name of the hotel existing in the State of Washington D.C. Watergate is used in association with the corruption scandal though it is also a name of one of the plushest hotels. Many popular personalities like Bob Dole a former Senator and Monica Lewinsky use it for the purpose of staying and laying low. This hotel became popular with regards to the scandal in which burglars broke into the office of Democratic Party's Committee office. The Security Guard by the name of Frank Wills was alert enough to deal with the incident and erupted it in time. There were three conspiracies involved in this scandal that were the plumbers conspiracy of revenge against Nixon's enemies through wire tapping, reelection conspiracy and the cover up conspiracy (Genovese, 1999). The history of Watergate goes back to the 1960s era of Vietnam War and also include important incident of Pentagon Papers being published in the 1970. Though the actual events with regards to the Watergate Scandal began in the year 1972 when the burglars were arrested for breaking in the office. By the year 1973 President Nixon was successful in becoming reelected but the Watergate Scandal has become too popular and well known among the American people. By the beginning of the 1974 entire nation was consumed and well aware of the scandal and the surrounding circumstance and causes. The history of American Politics is filled with such issues and scandals but none have brought down the presidency in a manner in which the Watergate Scandal did. In order to understand the Watergate scandal in detail, it is extremely important to comprehend the nature and culture of administration of President Nixon and his psyche. He was a secretive man who was unable to deal with criticism and got involved in multiple acts of duplicity. He had a long list of enemies due to his acts of corruption and he uses his power and position to take revenge against those enemies. Nixon was known for misuse of power and indulgence in illegal act which is evident from the Vietnam war when the Democratic party was winning the election and gaining polls in comparison to the republicans, Nixon did an under the table deal with the Vietnam leaders.
