Abstract

The advent of social media has caused a sharp increase in the amount of personal information online. The audience for this growing body of information is itself growing rapidly. This speaks to new kinds of exposure and visibility that researchers are ill prepared to understand. What is perplexing about this visibility is that users are actively engaged in generating and distributing personal information about themselves. The routine, taken for-granted nature of social networking is juxtaposed against a growing, searching and sort-able body of information. Some researchers have assessed the inherent loss of privacy associated with ubiquitous social networking. Contrary to a binary perspective of the private and the public, they suggest that advances in ICTs wear away at a kind of privacy that is best described in shades of grey. This paper aims to discuss the use of media and its impact to identify whether the society is acting as information society or surveillance society.

Introduction

It can be seen in any society that people are now under surveillance in an unprecedented degree. No doubt, before the era of surveillance they watched certain aspects of certain people, but now oversee all aspects of all types of people. This is increasing as highly specialised institutions use increasingly sophisticated means to collect personal information by monitoring (Barney, 2004). In fact, new tools of communication, transmission, processing and use of information and data have profoundly changed the scenario of the world economy by providing new opportunities for global development. Starting from the nineties emerging technology has defined a third industrial revolution where the new economy has profoundly affected the markets and also has significant impact on the lives of individuals. The concept of the information society is the result of the new economy because the effects of these changes in the economic sector also invest in social and cultural dimension of the society. In the information society is the most precious commodity, and the ability to store it, analyse it and pass it almost instantly everywhere and at lower cost, which is its added value (Lyon, 2007).

In the mathematical theory of information, the information is understood as characteristic features of the system and the probability of the option of further developments. In fact, Information is limited knowledge of existing opportunities.
