Training for Persons with Learning Disabilities

Introduction

Teaching is fraught with challenges. One such challenge is instructing students with learning disabilities. Students with learning disabilities don't grasp information the way students without such disabilities do. They often grow frustrated while trying to learn; some fail and even give up trying. The sad part is that it doesn't need to be this way. Teaching techniques and strategies can help students with a learning disability succeed.

Learning disabilities come in many forms, some more restrictive toward learning than others. Morrison, Ross, & Kemp (2007) said the category of learners with disabilities included “hearing and vision loss, speech impairment and mild mental retardation”. While it may be tempting to add other physical disabilities to that list, it would be incorrect. The inability to use ones legs, while a hurdle in many other areas of life, would not be described as a learning disability.

The most common type of learning disability is dyslexia. This disability is hard to diagnose and often lumped in with other learning problems. (McDonald, 2010, p. 271) Because it is misdiagnosed, students often don't receive the extra assistance they otherwise might. Those with learning disabilities can be successful in life, providing the disability is discovered early enough and methods to overcome the learning disability are employed.

Purpose Statement

The purpose of our paper is to show that learning disabilities can be minimized and even overcome. We believe that most, if not all, students with learning disabilities can be taught. In this paper we will discuss some of the common learning disabilities, problems students face and methods for teaching these students. We will describe how students with learning disabilities who received proper diagnosis, were able to learn and become very successful.

Method

The research for the study will consist of secondary information gained from various books, scholar journals, and few websites. The main focus is to utilize research conducted by various writers and incorporate them into the main topic. Training people with learning disabilities will focus on qualitative data. The qualitative data can use in depth interviews and discussions to understand the diagnosis of individuals as well as how to cater to the development and learning of their abilities like every other human. Strategies will be outlined regarding on how to deal with learning disabled individuals and which manner is the most effective in learning. Various success stories will be mentioned of people who suffered from learning disabilities and found a manner of overcoming their obstacle.

Discussion

Common Types of Learning Disabilities

The most common type of learning disability is dyslexia. Dyslexia is defined as a disability in learning which impairs an individual's composition or comprehension fluency to be able to read. Current developments in analyzing dyslexia as a neurological condition have been hampered due to number of institutes of United Kingdom and United States of America suggesting that this impairment might be invalid. The main focus behind this view is based on two critical reasons. First the people who are recognized ...
