Introduction

Music is a craft of sound that is backed by some deep rooted thought, emotion or an idea. It is a global language. The evolution of music and its genres traces to 2nd millennium BC when percussion instruments used to be played in the Egyptian orchestras. The development of music as a physical function and artistic phenomenon was initiated in the middle ages, also known as the age of faith. In the Middle Ages music was adopted as the source to teach religion in churches replacing the Holy books. Later, the baroque period gave birth to dramatization and stage, utilizing music as the sole medium of expression. Today music has innumerous uses and regarded as a reflection of the human heart, emotions and values. It is fully integrated in all facets of human existence.

Musical has been the most deeply carved genre of artwork throughout ages. In has undergone tremendous additions and developments during the Middle Ages, the baroque period, and the renaissance period. The paper attempts to discuss the work of masses and comparison and contrast of two composers of the time period of Renaissance and Middle Ages.

Masses

Masses, is the work piece of one of the most acclaimed musicians of all times, Josquin Dez Pras and Guillaume de Machaut after combining many musical styles. It was primarily played in churches and Chapels, later on, in became essential to all Religious occasions and congregations of the state. It gained popularity with the passage of time and became mandatory to different occasions, with professional bands. It was discovered in the early Renaissance period (Haar, p.45-69).

Josquin predominantly, composed two types of masses; divided as individual mass section and absolute masses. The composition of discrete mass section was due to their affinity with particular events and occasions. Later, he combined different masses to form sheer masses with different manuscripts, keeping different occasions in mind. Masses have been developed over three stages in time they are the early masses, the mature masses and the last masses. The primitive masses encompass canonic writings as musical as well as structural components. The mature masses contain clearer mass co ordination with compositional technique as well as vocal movements. The late masses are more mature accumulation of masses with balanced organization and free fantasy elements (Haar, p.45-69).

Mass Notre Dame is a little liturgical music that remains Orfeo Monteverdi (1607) for the history of opera genre: a first coherent designed by a single musician. This work was the most famous work done by Guillaume de Machaut (1300-1377) embodying the culmination of research in sacred music during the fourteenth century and is emblematic of the Ars Nova.
