The issue of Hunger

Introduction

Though United States is a rich country there are many places where people are not being looked after properly, especially children. This is the reason that the children of the country are suffering from hunger. They are not being provided with food. People who are living in the poor regions are facing a lot of problems because they are being ignored by the state. The nonprofit organization and NGOs are taking steps for providing food to the children who do not have proper facilities and those who are being ignored (Martin, pp.13-24). I have been living in Fort Drum NY since my childhood. As in all other parts of the country and eventually in the world, my area is also not safe from the issues of poverty and hunger. Most of the people and especially children's have to face malnutrition. This essay will be focusing on such issues which have been a part of our society and fewer programs have been introduced in order to handle such disastrous problems.

Discussion

Freedom from hunger necessarily starts with the production and support of everyone plenty of food. However, the mere of food does not guarantee getting rid of hunger. To do this, all people need to be allowed continued access to sufficient high-quality safe food for an active and healthy lifestyle. Throughout the world, more effort should be put in the field of food security to eradicate hunger, malnutrition and its devastating consequences for present and future generations. Obligatory condition of the basic right of all people - to live without hunger - is the contribution of each of us, manifested in the exchange of information, care and participation in relevant activities. School feeding programs have been widely adopted in many countries. Such programs encourage school enrollment and attendance and improve school performance and cognitive development (Sawyer, pp: 1-7). Many, however, operate only during the school year. School meals may replace, rather than supplement, meals eaten at home, although in situations when the mother is not at home during the day, it is questionable whether the child would get a midday meal anyway.

Supplementary Feeding Programs Are Conducted At Different Schools

The quality of foods served in a feeding program is important in enhancing the overall quality of the diet provided. For example, powdered milk fortified with vitamins A and D is preferable to unfortified milk.

Food Fortification

Food fortification is the addition of specific nutrients to foods. It can be used to restore nutrients lost in processing or to increase the level of a specific nutrient in a food (Leibel& Rosenbaum, pp. 621-628). Examples of fortified food commonly consumed in most of the cities of United States include milk containing vitamin D (originally introduced to prevent infantile rickets) and salt to which iodine is added (to prevent goiter).

Food Assistance

The food assistance increases the welfare of those suffering from chronic hunger. It ...
