Abstract

Fish have been raised in captivity since at least 2300 b.c.e., when people raised them for entertainment and to satisfy their intellectual interests. In addition, animals, shellfish, and plants have been kept as part of aquariums. In the 1800s, home aquariums became very popular in England. As interest spread, many people journeyed to the nearby English coasts in order to gather fish, plants, and other creatures. These were then kept in the available containers that constituted the aquariums of the day. As I see it, architecture functions very much like a human body. A piece of architecture must have three things to be considered compelling and unique: the exterior and interior, structural and mechanical, and function. It is my intention to integrate the above characteristics by using modern day technology that influences, predicts and characterizes the advancements of architecture as a style and a solution for the future; thus, becoming a vision of the future. I predict that architecture will expand to both outerspace and the oceans for the simple reason of agricultural land conservation. My main focus is on architecture at sea, because I was reared around and have always had a great interest in marine curricular activities. I have found that architecture is limited to its location. We have studied famous buildings that are models for architecture, from the birth of architecture to the present styles, but they all have one thing in common; they are all built on land. I am interested in creating an architecture which evolves around water.

Chapter 1: Introduction

Aquariums are now offering more than the traditional fish and underwater plant life exhibits. Today's visitors seek recreational and educational experiences when visiting aquariums. Accordingly, many aquariums are using distinct, special collections, and/or regional themes to differentiate their product. Indeed, in an apparent effort to become more viable tourist attractions, some aquariums have added marine mammal exhibits, featuring the antics of seals, whales, dolphins, and/or penguins.

History

Aquariums have been known to exist for at least 4,500 years. The Sumerians were the first known aquarists who kept fish in artificial ponds. As early as 1000 B.C., the Chinese bred fish with some degree of success. The selective breeding included developing ornamental gold fish which were later perfected in Japan. The ancient Romans not only kept fish for food and entertainment, but also were the first marine ...
