Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the impact of music education on students' achievement. Music education is believed to have a positive impact on the academic performance of students. It is also believed that music education enhances the cognitive development of students. In this study, quantitative research methodology was adopted in order to examine the perceptions of school teachers, administrators, and board members about music education. The sample size consisted of 100 participants. There were two schools that were surveyed in this study including an elementary school and a middle school. The findings of the study revealed that music education positively influences the academic achievement of students, learning environment, and school climate.

Context of the Study

For many years, music educators have argued that the study of music has a positive impact on the achievement of students. It has also been argued that music education is associated with the superior academic achievement of students. The current era of education has been characterized with different trends including a higher accountability of teachers, the efforts to engage more students in studies, and others. In this environment, it is important to evaluate and accept the importance of music education, and to evaluate its impact on test scores, attendance, and attitudes of students.

It is believed by educators that music education is a mean of self expression. It allows students to build a connection with them. With the help of music education, the learning environment can be transformed through integrated products and an increase in the number of learning opportunities for students. The inclusion of music education into the curriculum will not only result in enhanced academic achievement but also contribute towards increasing challenges for students. In this way, the inclusion of music education will make the educational environment more challenging.
