The comparison between "Big Two Hearted River" and "The Old Man and the Sea"

Introduction

Ernest Miller Hemingway was an American based journalist and author of the 21st century, who had an economical style of writing and placed significant influence on the 20th century fiction. Hemmingway also won a Nobel Prize in literature in 1954 and has written a number of novels, short stories and non-fictional material.

Big Two Hearted River

Big two hearted river is among a number of short stories written by Hemmingway in his collection of short stories entitles 'in our time'. The story comprises of a single character and only a few dialogues, which describe the whole plot and the story (Hemingway, 1981, Pp: 142). Big two hearted river is among the first few stories written by Hemmingway and follow the theory of omission: with little events occurring on the screen and remaining message being conveyed between the lines. The story, despite being short and brief, conveys the whole message and describes the whole philosophy of the writer.

The Old Man and The Sea

The old man and the sea is one of the various novels written by Hemmingway and is accounted as his best piece of writing. The novel was awarded Nobel Prize in Literature, and is the last piece of fiction produced by him. The story is an epic between an old man and a fish, describing a number of events and happenings in detail, explaining all the facts and not leaving anything on the imagination of the reader. It describes the story of s fisherman, who was unable to catch fish for eighty four days and was declared as the most unsuccessful of all fishermen. He is also declared unlucky, and his apprentice is disallowed to practice with him. Finally on the 85th day, he catches a fish and kept struggling for three days in order to bring it out. He succeeds in getting the fish out on the third day after catching it, and leaves it on the boat to take it home the next day (Hemingway, 1995, Pp: 56). The fish, while the fisherman is away, is eaten by the sharks, who leave only the skeleton behind. The next day the rest of fisherman discover the skeleton and the label on the unlucky fisherman are taken away, while all the fisherman promise to fish together from that day onwards.
