Introduction

The purpose of the study is to analyze the video “The Child Welfare System: In the Child's Best Interest” by Calmari production. There are many cases where the involved people feel pressure from different aspects such as families, children and the expectation of the agency (Kline, 1992). Many of the families which are reported for the child protective service are defensive, angry, embarrassed, threatened, confused and helpless (Salus & DePanfilis, 2003). The caseworkers have to manage the doubts whether the child is safe? How has upbringing affected the child?

Discussion

No family is perfect. Every person has a problem but some got it worse than others. The cases of abuses and neglect are staggering is quite shocking for one to understand that the world is not safe as it seems to be. Not every child is as blessed as you and lives a near to perfect life (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 2012). Those who are troubled, their issues get out of hand and they end up in juvenile courts or in need of child services. This video is full of cases that give emotional views of parents and the suffering of the children. Then they also are parents who sometimes have a pivot role in aggravating the situation. The situation differs from case to case.

There are numerous cases discussed in this video all that were involved with those parents and their children who interacted with child welfare system. In some cases it is the parents fault in others not. In one case of Dwayne, her mother turned a blind eye towards her child, because of their unconditional love for him and this blows more air on the problem. His mother was reluctant in admitting that her child was at fault. She blamed the problem on him being a case of sexual abuse herself and the fact could not seem to accept the child had wronged. Although, reports proved that he molested several kids including his young siblings. She wasn't supportive of the treatment and kept a negative attitude. After being released from therapy Dwayne again committed molestation and was taken back to the court and now is a juvenile delinquent. This caseworker was embarrassed and defensive of her child. Even being ignorant of the fact is wrong.
