“The Cask of Amontillado" and "A Good man is Hard to Find"

Introduction

It is a delight to compose a book review of "A Good Man is Hard to Find," by Flannery O'Connor, one of the American South's utmost storytellers. (John, pp. 127-138)

The publication, released in 1955, is an assemblage of nine short stories about life in the Southern United States throughout the 1920s to 1940s. Many have called the stories dark and disturbing. O'Connor introduces odd characters and happenings in the unfastening paragraphs of her stories, injecting a component of fear that builds until it finishes, often in a blood-curdling contrive twist. “The cask of Amontillado" has a very widespread topic to it. Taking revenge on an individual by utilizing his utmost passion contrary to him. However, the article flawlessly depicts how gullible persons can become when someone even if he is their foe notifies them that they are professionals in a specific area and that they require their professional recommendations in a specific matte and finally end up giving harshly for their ignorance. Like, in "The cask of Amontillado" the author is fed up with the many abuses conveyed upon him by Fortunate and vows to take revenge on him and that to in a critical way. (Allan, pp. 25-28)

 

Comparison and Analysis

Another odd likeness between the stories is the burial placement. Both narrators entomb their victims under their houses. This emphasizes their insanity; there are some causes for this. One cause could be that they are holding them as trophies. Another cause is that the dwellings symbolize the murders' minds and the basement comprises their subconscious. Flannery O'Connor author of "A good man is hard to find" states "No one can realize or can interpret, in this lesson district of Poe's lost spirits, why he should be punished". The stories endings and the narrator's punishment counts on how deep the narrator is adept to put their victims under their dwellings and, thus, how deep in their subconscious. Furthermore, "It is untrue to call him little more than a creative individual of nightmares, hallucinations, insane misdeeds and strange beauties, little more than an intuitive poetic genius dabbling in pretentious reasoning when he is not lost in the very dark plantation of pathological psychology". Poe comes to interior all of us with all his works, makes us reexamine us and our own actions. (Kathleen, pp. 113-117)

From the very starting of the stories, you can glimpse the similarities. The setting groups up the feeling and in both "A good man is hard to find" and The Cask of Amontillado" the setting is darkness. Poe values this darkness in the setting as a blunt metaphor for the minds of both narrators. "A good man is hard to find" wrappings a time span of roughly eight days with most of the significant activity happening each evening round midnight.
