Introduction

Telemedicine is a concept which holds immense importance when it comes to revolutionizing the healthcare industry. Telemedicine brings efficiency and reduce cost, but its proper implementation and risk associated with it can make it a success. Telemedicine in essence provided a linkage between the doctor and the patient through electronic means. The whole concept behind this is to speed up the healthcare system and better link all the stakeholders. The risks associated with it are to be wary of, yet this piece of model can have a far reaching effect on the way we look and define healthcare. It's important to adhere with the standards governing healthcare industry and ensure proper measures to come up with a workable model to ensure success over the long run. By and large a mechanism as per reducing risk and enabling everyone to account for will go a long way in coming with success.

Telemedicine

In simplistic terms telemedicine is defined as the use of technology for providing healthcare services, when the patient and the medical practitioner are not present in the same area. As per the American Telemedicine Association, it's defined as the usage of electronic communication for providing suggestions to patients and improving the level of services patient gets and giving them access to better medical treatment and services (Kazley, Ozcan, 2008). A formal definition for telemedicine is yet to be agreed upon amongst the federal and state governments. As per the centers for Medicare, it defines telemedicine as a two way communication between the patient and the doctor and it does not include sources of communication such as telephone and email.

Activities and services related to telemedicine have been found to be operating In United States for more than 40 years. It's to be noted that the concepts of telehealth and telehealth has gained greater importance since the last decade. The reason for this increased importance could be associated with better and improved access to technology, rising demand from patients, cost minimization, better compensation and the improvements in telemedicine program. Challenges are there when it comes to setting up a workable program for telemedicine.
