Introduction

Tablet computer is a mobile computer which is to target mainly the business organizations. It is operated by touch screen and therefore requires no external peripherals. Companies such as Apple, Samsung and Blackberry have the major market in manufacturing of the Tablet computers. Tablet computer is replacing the personal computers and laptops due to the number of benefits it provide to the user. It is portable and weighs no more than 2 pounds. It is the result of advancement in science and technology which has combined the Mobile and computers into a small scale integrated circuit known as Tablet computer. Its small size means that the battery consumption is less and therefore it is more reliable than Laptop computers. Tablet computers need an operating system to run. Android, Blackberry iOS and Linux are some of the operating systems which are widely used in Tablet Computers nowadays.

Discussion

According to the survey conducted by International Data Corporation in May 2013, Tablet Computer sale will exceed to those of Personal Computers. Tablet computer shipment grew 58.5 percent in the year 2013(IDC, 2013). Total shipment for tablet computer for the year 2013 is 229.3 million units whereas in year 2012, the total shipment was 144.5 million units (see appendix 1.1). In addition, IDC predicts that the Tablet computers market will overcome the Personal Computers market by 2015. This is not the surprise as most organizations prefer to use Tablet Computers nowadays due to the number of advantages it is providing over the Personal Computers and Laptop Computers.

Use in Education

Many educational institutions are using tablet computers to enhance the learning process and instruction. Tablet computers have the built-in application of writing which means that users can directly write with their hands on the screen. A tablet computer application known as Classroom presenter, developed by Microsoft allows Instructor to hand write directly on the Tablet computer's screen which will be displayed on the power point slide. These slides are also displayed on the student's computer, and they can also write any comments or side notes. This means that there will be a strong interaction between instructor and the students. Use of digital ink with Tablet Computers has allowed it to become a white board. This means that the instructor can keep the electronics copies of lectures and provide it to the students whenever needed. Recently a new Tablet application called WriteON is also launched which allows the instructor to write on the virtual screens (University of Dayton, 2013). Engineering software such as workbench and Matlab has a number of complicated instructions. Now the instructor can highlight these instructions using WriteON with important annotations making the instructions clearer. One of the effective way in which a Teacher can improve the performance of the students is to give the video feedback to them.
