Systems Operations Management

Introduction

The Automotive Industry in UK and the world has gone through a major transformation process. Specifically in United Kingdom and Japan, the installation of new assembly, consolidation and de-nationalization of auto parts and phenomena such as the introduction of low displacement engines have important strategic implications for companies, as well as their supply chains. Given these implications, this study aims to understand the interrelationships between the Operations Strategy (OS) and Supply Chain Management (SCM). The paper will be analyzing, from the perspective a manager, case studies in two engine manufacturers and two of its suppliers.

Company

The Morgan Motor Company is a British automobile manufacturer. It is located in Malvern Link Area Malvern (Worcestershire) and employs around 163 people. The company produces on average 600 cars per year. A basic model can go for $ 44,000, but some top models can go for up to $ 300,000. All cars are produced manually, which ensures that no car is like another. This is the main characteristic of the company. The waiting period for a car is approximately one to two years.

History of the Company

It was founded in 1910 by Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan, generally known as "HFS" and was run by him until he died at age of 77 in 1959. Peter Morgan, son of HFS led the company until a few years before his death in 2003. Currently the company is headed by Charles Morgan, the son of Peter Morgan.

The first vehicles were produced with only three wheels, models with two or four seats. Known as Three-Wheelers (tricycles), they became the icon of the automaker. It was only in 1936 when Morgan first produced vehicle with four wheels, which had been shown in exhibitions in London and Paris.

Manufacturing

The entire process of manufacturing vehicle bodies and chassis is a craft. They use wood as a raw material, and metal plates that are cut and shaped by the workers. These workers are true craftsmen. The carpenters, plumbers, painters, etc.., working in that factory, are the true protagonist in the manufacture of each car.

Maintenance and Operational Model

As maintenance activities depend directly on the "Maintenance Man", to work efficiently, it is essential that he is qualified and integrated. This detail is the basis of operational improvements, quality and speed of maintenance services at Morgan.

Maintenance is a set of techniques used by the organizations, in order to preserve plant, machinery and buildings for as long as possible, with maximum efficiency, thereby bearing in reducing waste, satisfy and motivate receiving both as making maintenance.

Task 1

Although the implementation of the practices and philosophy of “lean production” constitutes a milestone in the global auto industry, this has gone through blunt transformations. According to Peter & Robinson, these are not only restricted to lean manufacturing. Briefly, these changes occur in three main areas:

Internal restructuring of production, through the adoption of lean practices,

Setting new supply relationships, due to the formation of regional trading blocs

The introduction of new organizational arrangements (modular industrial ...
