Affect of Biomechanics, Psychology and Physiology on Spike Shot
Spike Shot in Volleyball
A spike in volleyball refers to jumping over the level of the net, and smashing the ball in a downward angle across the net into the opponent's court. Spike shot is the most powerful shot in the sport of volleyball. Spiking is a crucial element to scoring and playing the game with intensity. A spike can be hit at the net or from behind the attack line depending upon where the setter has placed the ball. A spike shot can be hit in different ways to ensemble different game situations (McCarron 2010, p. n.d).
Biomechanics
Biomechanics involves the study of the function and structure of organic systems by means of laws of mechanics. The study of mechanics includes two sub fields. 1 is statics that deals with the study of systems in state of stable motion i.e. at rest or in motion with constant velocity. Second is dynamics that deals with the study of systems in motion where there is presence of acceleration. There are numerous titles of books on the subject of biomechanics in relation to sports like, The Mechanics of Athletics, The Fundamentals of Sports Biomechanics, Biomechanics Analysis of Sport and Biomechanics of Human Motion.
Biomechanics provide the study related to the body in a mechanicals sense. This field attempts to define the complexity of human movement by examining at the parts involved, similar to the manner in which a motor mechanic may explain how a car works. The biomechanics in relation with volleyball refers to the appliance of this field mainly to the movements in volleyball.
Biomechanical Analyses
Generally there are two ways to study and measure the aspects related to mechanical human movement. One is quantitative way that engages the use of statistics in assessment of human movement. This approach eliminates the subjective data and relies only on data that is gathered with the help of different instruments. This approach provides with the results that is more scientific, predictable and numerical. Whereas, the second approach involves the use of data descriptions without the use of numbers generated by different measuring instruments. Both of the above mentioned analysis plays a significant role in performing biomechanical analysis of human movement (Boone & Birnbaum n.d, p. 1).
Biomechanics analysis can be divided in to four different areas.
Non Cinematographic Analysis
This analytical technique is most commonly used by athletes and coaches. It involves no use of videotape or film for capturing the performance of spike shot or section parts of the implementation of motor skill. This approach does not make use of complicated mathematical calculations.
Basic Cinematographic Analysis
This analytical technique includes the utilization of video tape or film for improvement of performance. It also does not provide with any arithmetical calculations. The major benefit of this technique is to that one can analyze the spike shot movement frame by frame in slow motion. It allows for seeing what actually had occurred against the ...
