Social deviancy is at its peak and there is too much negativity around. Countless innocents are subjected to domestic violence, drug abuse, sexual abuse, discrimination and racism daily. There is an urgent need of social workers who shall devote their lives to the noble cause of helping and reshaping these poor lives. This paper aims at discussing who social workers are, what their duties and tasks are, and most importantly, the qualifications required to become a licensed and practising social worker.

Social service is a profession seeking to excavate positive externalities in society. It is centred around developing the quality of life of countless innocent individuals and unaware groups through research, society organization and teachings to those afflicted with social injustices or poverty and violations of their rights.

What is social work?

The concept of Social work has its extraction in the socio-economic awareness brought along with the Industrial Revolution in the great effort of the wealthy and the noble to eradicate poverty. It is mainly concurrent with charity work, but now this issue should be understood in much more broader expressions. It is very common for social workers to find themselves dealing with penalties of many other social issues like racism, homophobia, gender discrimination, sexism or domestic violence etc.

Social work is a brilliant career choice for individuals who value human dignity and social justice. This field is much more than spending time with people in old homes over a cup of tea listening to their sorrows. It is just as diverse and complex as the individuals, families, and communities they serve.

What does a social worker do?

As a social worker, your main duty is to listen to your client's problem and study the policies provided by the authorities who are dealing with them and then work out a plan that will hopefully improve their standards of living now, and in the future. Patience is a key factor required in social workers as they will have to listen to the other person's point of view no matter how strongly you disagree. A social worker's job is very emotionally demanding. They also have to deal with some very unpleasant situations like separating a child from his family due to the family having a shortage of funds to provide for that child or if either of the parents is a negative influence (prostitutes or drug dealers) or if the child is a victim to any form of domestic violence. They also work for individuals who have been socially excluded or are either experiencing crisis and their roles are to offer professional help to enable the afflicted to be capable of helping themselves.
