Introduction

In this literature review, it is sought to identify the main factors related to psychiatric patients' adherence to psychopharmacological treatments, definitions, implications, and results. We conducted a literature review in Medline and Pubmed using the keywords such as; adherence, mental illness and antipsychotic medication. We selected 52 works. Most of them (73%) sought to identify factors that may influence treatment adherence. The remaining 27% sought to evaluate the influence of professional interventions on adherence. The main factors related to the patient, type of medication, social factors. With respect to interventions, those combining educational and behavioral strategies were more efficient. Nowadays, antidepressants are the most commonly prescribed medications in the United States. In United States, the sale of antidepressants in the past decade has increased by 110%, according to the report of INFARMED, and in Brazil, the sale of antidepressants rose 48%. According to experts, the increase in sales of this type of medication due to prescription exaggerated happiness pill, both by doctors from other areas and for patients without depression. The estimate of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the next 20 years is not the most encouraging. According to a survey of the institution, the depression will be, in 2020, the second disease which is more prevalent in the world.

Different Approaches towards psychotherapy

Many forms of psychotherapy differ from approaches that focus solely on drugs, leaning on the causes rather than the symptoms. Many therapies teach people depressed or anxious new skills, new strategies to deal with the problems of inducing situations, restructuring of thoughts and beliefs about themselves, about the world around them, and about their future, which can lead to new patterns of behavior. Although not a panacea, psychotherapy can provide strategies and methods to change people's thinking, strategies to deal with situations of day-to-day reduction techniques and the unpleasant physical symptoms, producing lasting benefits. If taught people who are depressed relaxation techniques and assertiveness skills appropriate, if they improve their communication skills, and show them how to avoid negative reality, surely your malaise will improve, as well as drift and hopelessness.

There is no pill that can teach these skills. Changes relatively simple lifestyle can also make a significant difference. For example, a study conducted at Duke University, a group of patients given a thirty-minute program of exercise three times a week, which showed effective as drug therapy in alleviating the symptoms of depression in a matter of a few days.

Non-adherence to medication is a complex and universal phenomenon that develops gradually in the course of psychiatric treatment and is related to disease aggravation (Moskowitz, & Young, 2006).
