Introduction

The Common Core State Standards are a set of standards that lay the expectations of skills and knowledge a student should acquire in their Kindergarten to Grade 12 education careers so that they can graduate from high school with certain standard skills. These standards will enable them to succeed in entry-level college courses and in employment efforts.

The Common Core Standards have certain advantages and disadvantages. Their adoption has given rise to a lot of debate amongst educators and parents alike.

The Common Core Standards adopted in 2010 are a set of internationally bench- marked standards that define what a student is to learn at various levels of his educational career. The aim of the standards is to bring all state level education to a certain bench mark that ensures all students have a certain level of skill in the specific disciplines.

The philosophy behind the Common Core Standards is to align content with practice. Students should not depend on procedures too much.They should be able to comprehendreal life problems coherently, explain conclusions, apply knowledge to practical situations, be able to use technology, retreat for an overview, or diverge from a known method to find a solution. In short, a lack of practicality effectively keeps a student from applying skills to real life situations (Flick, Kuchey, 2010).

The Standards are definedboth for mathematics and English language. They are clear in their emphasis on what students are to learn, meaning the content of the intended curriculum, and not on how that curriculum is to be taught (Porter, et al., 2011).
