Schizophrenia

Abstract

The research paper attempts to explain the study about the psychological issue i.e, Schizophrenia. It describes what are the possible symptoms of this disorder and gave a clear explanation to the issues that are being faced b the patients of this disorder. The paper also explains causes, types and positive and negative effects of this disorder and further highlights how it is affecting in the workplace.

Introduction

Schizophrenia is a brain disorder that affects the way a person acts, thinks, and sees the world. “They may see or hear things that don't exist, speak in strange or confusing ways, believe that others are trying to harm them, or feel like they're being constantly watched,” (Smith, Melinda). The symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disordered thinking and emotional unresponsiveness (Shiraev, 2010). There are genetic and environmental factors that can cause schizophrenia. Treating schizophrenia is often done with antipsychotics and psychotherapy. With these two treatments combined, the symptoms decrease significantly and sometimes diminish. Schizophrenia affects the patient and the people around them. The stress on both individuals usually requires therapy to help them cope with the disorder. Without therapy, the chances of suicide are extremely high. Schizophrenic people do not have multiple personalities; they simply have a brain disorder Schizophrenia also causes a mutation sustained various aspects of mental functioning of the individual, mainly from the consciousness of reality, and neuropsychological disorganization rather complex, especially the executive , leading to difficulty maintaining motivated behavior and goal-directed, and significant social dysfunction (Shiraev, 2010).

History

The concept of schizophrenia began historically with the term "dementia praecox" of Benedict Morel mid- nineteenth century. In 1898 Emil Kraepelin delimited within the various disorders such as dementia praecox hebephrenic and catatonia. Precisely because of the many combinations possible symptomatic, it has been suggested that schizophrenia treat various disorders and not just one (Esa bin Abd Samad, 2004). For this reason, Eugen Bleuler schizophrenias preferred using the plural to refer to this condition when he coined the name in 1908. Despite its etymology, schizophrenia is not the same as dissociative identity disorder (or "multiple personality disorder" or "split personality"), with which it was often confused.

A person with schizophrenia may benefit from antipsychotic medication, and psychotherapy. A person may also benefit from vocational or social rehabilitation. In order for one to be diagnosed with schizophrenia one has to have two or more symptoms for most of a one-month period. The child may have problems with speech and socializing. From a young age a child should be around others. The child will pick up more vocabulary and will be able to understand more.
