Introduction

Nurse Manager is considered as the backbone of a particular unit. Their responsibilities are both for clinical and administrative aspects. A Nurse Manager is responsible for supervising of Nurses and addressing the patients. Nurse Manager requires specialized expertise, good communication skills, ability to take charge and leadership skills (Cipriano, 2011). There are some major responsibilities of Nurse Manager which includes, Nurse Empowerment, retention of staff, communication and management of generational issues.

Nurse Empowerment

Nurse Managers plays an important role in developing empowerment for nurses. Empowerment can be defined as the capability to get things done. It includes the mobilization of resources and providing information, support and opportunities. Management should provide resources to Nurse Managers to enhance the empowerment. It is essential that the organizational structure should be well identified because it will affect the perception of empowerment. Nurse Manager should be aware of empowerment in order to empower others. If a manager does not feel empowered then he will not be able to create such conditions that will empower others.

According to the evaluation of the study, an efficient nursing staff can deliver better patient care (Regan & Rodriguez, 2011). It means that empowerment will increase the efficiency and effectiveness of nursing staff. It is the role and responsibility of Nurse Manager to provide such resources to the staff which enhance their empowerment. Each and every strategy related to empowerment is following by Magnet Hospital successfully. Nurse Manager should pass on some powers to her staff members to enhance empowerment. This power should be related to decision making and communication.

Capacity of decision making means, a staff nurse has complete authority to make a decision in any emergent condition. It is not possible for a staff nurse to notify a Manager in a life threatening situations. Staff Nurse should possess complete empowerment regarding this aspect. This type of empowerment will build up decision making ability and confidence level in staff nurses (Regan & Rodriguez, 2011).

Communication empowerment means a Nurse Manager should regard the diagnosis or recommendation about any issue by staff nurse. Manager should trust her employees for the sake of empowerment. Empowerment will increase the confidence level in staff nurses.

It will also provide benefits to Manager. Empowerment primarily reduces the burden of a Manager. She does not have enough time to meet and discuss each and every case. So, empowerment basically helps a manager at this point. Empowerment is also necessary for the staff members to enhance their skills and decision making ability (Regan & Rodriguez, 2011).

Retention of Staff

Staff retention is a process in which staff is encouraged to remain with the same organization. Nurse Manager has a great responsibility of staff retention. She has a direct relation with her employees. That is why it is necessary for a Nurse Manager to maintain a good behavior with her staff members. Good behavior of a Manager will increase the satisfaction level of employees (Duffield et al. 2010).
