Introduction

The Republic is one of the most important books written by Plato. He began to write the Republic between 390-385 BC (in the transition period of his writings) and he was completed with chapters II to X presumably by 370 BC (in the period of maturity the author). No doubt, Plato has been without doubt one of the two greatest philosophers of Ancient Greece. According to them, there is no real death (Annas, 1981). According to the book X, our reality is composed of ideas from which (world's reality) is structured. In Republic from book X he expresses his conception of art, politics, the society, the justice, and immortality, virtue, good, and evil. The notion of the soul is in itself a major problem in the dual system of the theory of ideas. In this paper, we are going focus on the concept of soul immortality. He has argued that soul is immortal. This paper will focus on this argument. The purpose of this paper is to let readers have clarity about this concept.

Discussion

The book has divided soul into two parts: the rational and the irrational. The imitator creates, and therefore not true. The rational part of the soul seeks learning while the irrational part seeks for satisfaction of material pleasures. The rational part of the soul is the abode of knowledge and their virtues. The soul is immaterial and immortal, that is not a physical thing. It can not be seen, touched, weighed. It is jailed or imprisoned in the body. this belief comes from Greek philosophy mainly exposed by two of the most important Greek philosophers, Plato and Socrates.
