A review and critique of reflective practice models to include Argyris and Schon, Kolbe, Gibbs, Johns, Brookfield and Rolfe
Introduction
Reflective practice could simply be explained as the capacity of an individual to reflect on a certain action, which engages into a development of continuous learning process. Reflective practice is one of the essential characteristics of professional practice. Reflective practice can support as an important tool inside practice based learning settings, especially the settings in which the individuals learns from their own professional experiences, rather hen learning from formal teaching. The term reflective practice has gained quite a pace in past few years, particularly in the area of professional development for practitioners that are working in the areas public healthcare, and education. This notion of the how to learn in the best possible way from your own experience has a much wider relevance especially when it comes to the learning environment inside an organization. Inside business organizations the people in the leadership positions have a tremendous opportunity to develop their skills by engaging themselves in reflective practice. In this paper we are going to review and critique the reflective practice models of Argyris and Schon, Kolb, Gibbs, Johns, Brookfield and Rolfe.
Argyris and Schon Reflective Practice Model
Argyris and Schon introduced the single loop, and double loop learning, their theory was specifically built around the amendments and recognitions of perceived error or fault. Single loop learning occurs when individual or an organization, even after committing errors have successfully achieved their goal, through correcting those errors, and once the errors are fixed they continue to work on the same strategy, polices, and techniques. Whereas, double loop learning involves the modification of the personal objectives policies, an strategies that are bin set by an employee or the organization for themselves, under this theory in case error which has previously occurred rises again a new framing system is used or overcoming that error.
Nigel Cross (2011) revealed that the study of Argys and Schon is one of the most influential studies for the employees at work; however, he also revealed that the study is highly sensitive, and acute. The reason behind the veracity o this analysis is highly recognizable or the employees, and the designers of the research. Nigel Cross (2011) also found it extremely surprising that the research study was based on only one partial example o the design activity, and that design activity is not even a real design, instead it has been taken from certain observations, and experiences (Greenwood, 1993, pp. 1183-1187,).
The reflective practice model of Argys and Schon has influenced the health, and education sector of the state. Cole and Fish (1998) saw this theory as a tool for improving and revising the professional practice inside organizations. This is the reason behind the fact, why the theory is critiqued by the individuals belonging to various sectors that include the individuals ...
