Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in Servicemen and women

Introduction

The primary purpose of this research is to investigate the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in servicemen and women on duty. PSTD refers to a specific type of disorder that occurs due to some powerful trauma and this trauma may have significant and ever lasting affects on one's life. The victims of PSTD may include rape survivors, natural disaster survivors and military men and women. According to a survey by National Institute of Mental Health, around 10% of women and 5% of men in USA go through PSTD once in their lives (www.nami.org, 2012).

PSTD is actually caused by the perception of people regarding an event being unsafe and traumatic to them, it reflects his or her insecurity towards the world and the event. That is the reason why, some of the soldiers returning from war are caught by PSTD and others do not show any apparent symptom of PSTD. Although these soldiers have suffered through the same situation and lived in the same environment (Downing, 2008)

PSTD prevailed heavily amongst servicemen and women the most due to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. According to a study by Litz and Schlenger in 2009, there were around 1.8 million of US military troops that participated in Iraq and Afghanistan wars and went through severe war conditions and out of which 37% were deployed twice in a certain time period. According to a military research, half of the Soldiers who are returning from war conditions to USA do not report and get their PTSD treated and 20% to 50% of them do not continue the treatment therapies and leave in between the process. 15% of young army men suffer from PTSD (Robson. S., 2012). Some of the signs and symptoms of this disorder are getting flashbacks, unable to relax, insomnia, shaken confidence, exhaustion, panic, anger, depression, guilt, rigorous behavior, and unable to trust (Paolillo. J. D., n.d.).

Purpose Statement

The primary purpose of this research is to inquire the reasons behind the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in servicemen and women and treatment and management of these soldiers against PTSD. In addition, the research also takes into account the behaviors of those servicemen and women, which do not report or take any action about this disorder.

Research Questions

Some of the research questions based on the research purpose and concepts are listed below to conduct the research, these are:

How do servicemen and women develop the sever effects of PSTD?

Are these servicemen and women getting the adequate treatment after coming back from war conditions?

How do servicemen and women cope with PSTD?

Why some of the servicemen and women do not report the affects and problems of PSTD despite having its severe affects?

Research Plan

We have chosen to conduct this research via qualitative research method. The research questions stated in the above section would be thoroughly researched with respect to theories, literature, observations and experimentation done in this field of study historically and recent (Murray. M. A., 2007). In addition, a structured ...
