Analysis and Examination of Sustainable Up-Gradation of Slum Development in Developing Nations: Mumbai (India) and Dhaka (Bangladesh)

Abstract

A developing nation is always concerned of developing its slum areas and making sure that all the needs of the citizens are satisfied to its full and the residents are provided with all that they need. The following paper analyses the differences created by investments through the utilization of environmental assessment systems and conducting a survey in which it is evaluated what needs of the citizens are not met and how the slum areas suffer from poverty and other diseases and issues (Bradford et.al, 2003, pp 157-170). Moreover, the paper also suggests a few actions for coming up with corrective actions and making sure that improvement programs are implemented in such a manner that they are able to provide the residents of the slums with benefits. The requirement over here is to ensure that the slum projects are implemented in a manner that they reap benefits for the squatters and provide them with accessibility to the basic necessities in life including favorable living conditions.

The research has been conducted with gathering data using case study and articles approach in a case study was utilized in order to identify the situations in the slum areas of Dhaka and Mumbai. The research included case study analyzing situations in the slum areas of India and Bangladesh i.e. Dharavi in Mumbai and Korail in Dhaka. The findings are calculated on the basis of factors identified in the case studies and established researches which included the slum areas of Mumbai, India where infrastructural projects were implemented in comparison to a slum area of Dhaka, Bangladesh (Bradford et.al, 2003, pp 157-170). The countries under observation in the following paper are Bangladesh and India where Dhaka is considered to be a developing state and is on the way of coming up with developmental projects in order to make sure that it is ranked as one of the successful states in Asia.

Environmental Analysis tool is used for evaluating the state of the slum areas where one state uses the tool and the other does not use it (Bradford et.al, 2003, pp 157-170).

The outcomes of the survey have been evaluated on the basis of the existing problems in both the areas before the implementation of the projects under the head of Environmental Assessment tool and identified that the area which used the tool had a considerable improvement in the situation. Whereas, in another area where EA was not utilized, the problems still existed. On the other hand, the thing which required more attention was the fact that new problems were also faced as a result of the implementation of new infrastructures and projects. The states encountered numerous problems in relation to this and have not been successful in coming up with projects that can help them improve the conditions in these areas.
