Possible Causes and Prevention of Suicidal Acts

Introduction

In many parts of the world, including developed and developing nations, self directed violence is one of the most grave public health issues. The violence acts include suicidal behaviors (non fatal and fatal attempts); intentional self harm, suicidal ideation (considering, thinking about and planning for suicide) and non-suicidal but intentional self harm (for instance self mutilation oriented behaviors). Non-fatal and fatal suicidal behaviors have most articulated mortality and morbidity rate and are therefore the focus of several healthcare organizations. Due to greater impact of suicide on young adults and adolescents comparative to other cause of deaths, suicide has been graded as the5th leading cause of years of potential life lost before age (World Health Organization, 2010).

Causes of Suicide

Theorists have identified four leading dimensions of suicides. These include using suicide as a form of escape (escapist) from intolerable and excruciating circumstances such as punishment or grief; as a form of displaying aggressiveness towards others, with an attempt to emotionally harm others or make them regret; Oblative, whereby an individual commits suicide as a sacrificial act in order to attain the desired state in other's opinion and at last suicidal attempts can be Ludic, whereby an individual commits suicide in order to prove his or herself.

Lack of social support while passing through a traumatic condition can lead to suicidal feeling, social support has been identified as the biggest factor that can lead to suicidal act or can prevent them from happening. Social world of humans comprises of several critical relationships, after you lose a dear relationship due to death or any other reason, for instance fights or breakups, the life seems worthless. People survive within the paradigm of the framework of relationships and other environmental factors that forms the environment of an individual. These are “layers” of environment are the complex factors that play integral part in human development and survival. Any damage to these layers with respect to the emotional and psychological modification can divert the perception of an individual towards social thoughts.

Some of the psychological disorders such as border line personality disorder can also lead to suicidal acts. An individual with the borderline personality disorder usually experiences a recurring pattern of inadequacy and unsteadiness in behavior, mood, self-image and intimate personal relationships. This can lead to critical impairment and anxiety in friendships, family or on the work front. An individual with this kind of disorder might usually seem intelligent, bright, friendly, warm and comfortable to be with. They can continue with the same attitude until their defense structure falls apart. This usually happens when an individual experiences extreme stressful situations for example death of a loved one or breakup or a dear relationship.
