Introduction

The disease of polio is similar to that of a virus. One can get affected by it via mouth in the first place. It is not a severe disease and it does not cause serious sickness amongst patients. However its affect can be seen in form of paralyzed arm, leg or any part of body. It also leaves significant effect on brain as well in form of meningitis. This disease can prove to be extremely deadly as it can also cause paralyzing effects on breathing organs in human bod that results in immediate death. The polio virus can be commonly found in majority of countries such as USA. Majority of people used to get paralyzed every year before the invention or formation of vaccine that prevents people from getting affected by polio virus (CDC, 2011). The word polio is derived from the Greek language. It mainly affects one's spinal cord that further results into paralyzing effects. This disease is a belongs to the enterovirus sub group with a family name of Picornaviridae. There are mainly three types of polio viruses, which are P1, P2 and P3.

Discussion

Polio became the cause of around 6000 people in USA in 1916 and had paralyzing effects on more than 27000 people. It has been recorded that there used to be more than 25000 cases reported as of polio every year. The solution of this problem i.e. vaccine of polio was initiated in 1955. As a result the effected number of patients by polio decreased by 3000 in 1960 and it turned out to be only 10 people impacted by polio in 1979. With the introduction of polio vaccination, polio has been successfully vanished from majority of developed countries. However polio is swept from USA to a larger extent but it is still prevalent in major areas of USA. The infection can spread from one person to another.

Polio vaccination should be given to the body organs like leg and arm and the vaccination is given in a particular age and could be given with all other vaccines. Usually all children are suppose to get vaccines at the age of 2 months, 4 months, 6 to 18 months, and the last dose of polio vaccine is given at the age of 4 to 6 years. In total there are 4 doses of polio vaccines given to children. The adults don't get polio vaccination done usually due to the fact that they are given polio vaccination in their childhood. However, these adults may require to be given polio vaccinations while they travel to areas of the world where polio virus is very much common, staff of laboratory that deals purely with the polio infection or virus are also given these vaccinations for sale of prevention, and the social and health care workers that treat the patients with this virus are also given polio vaccination.
