Introduction

The theory of psychiatrist Sigmund Freud revolutionized the therapeutic approach given to the patient. Freud developed a form of psychotherapy, which sought to explain and provided treatment of pathological behaviors stemming from their emotional disorders. This method was based on an analysis of the mental life of the patient to allow diagnosis of the causes of the problems. For this reason, it is called psychoanalysis. Research aspect of psychoanalysis was to enable the structure to describe the human psyche and the understanding of the mechanisms guiding human development and functioning of his personality. Freud also aroused interest in the creation of human social environment and interaction of the environment on human mental processes. So he studied the cultural and social aspects of the human being.

Analysing The Phobia Of Little Hans from Psychoanalytic Perspective

The case study shows Hans showed quite strange keen interest in his genitals. For example, he noticed that the animals at the local zoo also have reproductive organs, their size exceeds the size of his own. He also expressed regret that he had not seen genitals of neither his father nor mother. He believed that because his parents are adults, their genitals should also be big like a horse. When Hans was almost 5, his father sent a letter to Freud in which he explained his serious concerns that were related to Hans. He expressed hat his main issue was that the little child was extremely afraid that a horse may come over on the street to bite him. And this fear is some how connected to the big sized penis of the horse which frightens him even more (Moore & Fine, 1990). This according to him was a psychoanalytical problem which Freud could only handle as he was the one who had come up with the psychoanalytic theory to solve issues related to the brain.

The family dwelled just opposite a very busy horse coaching inn and Hans was even more disturbed when leaving his place because he had to encounter so many horses when ever he went out of the house. This terrified him even more. When Hans went to meet Freud, he was inquired about those horses of which he felt afraid of. Hans thought over and it and replied that he was afraid of those white horses which had black bits around their mouth.  After analyzing this, Freud believed that the horse Hans was referring to depicted his father, and the black bits were his father's moustache. After several letters went back and forth, Freud came up to a conclusion that little Hans was extremely frightened of that thought that his father would castrate him whenever he would want to have his mother close to him. Freud deciphered that the horses that the little boy was talking about which were related to his phobia represented his father.
