Introduction

Pharmacy is division of science that deals with the preparation, dispensing and possible outcomes of the medicinal drugs. It can be defined as the art and science of preparing the drugs, assessing their pharmacokinetic profiles and dispensing of these drugs.

Pharmacy is one of the most significant pillars of health care practice. Without the preparation of drugs, patients can not be treated. It is essential that quality medications with targeted actions should be prepared. These medications should be tested for their safety and efficacy. This is done by reviewing their clinical profiles by the health care professionals, called pharmacists. These pharmacists are called the drug experts, and their role in the pharmacy is pivotal.

History of pharmacy

Pharmacy is not a new terminology. The roots of this profession dates back to the ancient time. Pharmacy was born with the first human birth on the earth. Since then, the profession has been developing rapidly. In the past, the term apothecary was used for the formulation and dispensing of the medicinal agents. This has been now replaced by Pharmacy and pharmacist (Bender, n.d).

The actual practice of apothecary started in the Babylonian's civilization period. The profession was further modifies by the Chinese pharmacy. However, the first pharmacy shop was established in the 8th century. Since then, the profession is in a continuously developing cycle.

Pharmacy as a profession

Pharmacy is a vast profession with a number of divisions. However, it is commonly misaligned with medicine or chemistry. Pharmacy, in reality, is a totally different profession. The primary goal of pharmacy is the production and dispensing of drugs.

As described by the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the mission of pharmacy is to serve the society and take responsibility for the safe and effective use of medications, technology and devices, and to serve the population in order to obtain optimal therapeutic outcomes (Allen, 2012, pp.1).

Pharmacy in the past

In the past, the pharmacy was not that advanced the much it is now. The production was done on a small scale, and the safety and efficacy was not measured to the extent it has been measured now. the machinery used in the industries was incapable of multitasking and the efficiency did not match the efficiency of today's machinery.

Modernization of pharmacy

As we are living in the age of technology, advancement in machinery is a rapidly growing process. With the current rate of development, modernization in the machinery is also a marked process.
