Introduction

During the decade of 1950s, the top aim of the United States of America is to build a massive fleet of arms and weapons against any potential Soviet aggression on it. Nuclear weapon has the ability to do this but it requires a powerful missile system with precision and speed to deliver a nuclear weapon up to a significant level. Historically, it is reported that the bomber aircrafts and missiles have the tendency to do this task of delivering the bombs to its unwilling recipient.

Discussion

In order to find a key role in the strategic defense of the United States of America, the all three armed forces of the nation competed aggressively with each other to promote their self designed systems of missiles and weapons. The Air force tried to design long range destructive bombers and then many prototypes of ICBMs. The army of USA also proposed its own self designed ICBM. The navy put its share by making a large fleet of nuclear powered submarines having the ability of carrying Polaris missiles system, which is also called as Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM).

The program initiated by Army could not survive for prolong period of time due to insufficiency of funds but the programs of USAF kept going despite of several expensive and historical flops like B-36 bomber. The program of US navy took the lead from the front in terms of its cost effectiveness and efficiency that took the missile technology of USA to a new level of excellence.

The Polaris project is reported to have the largest triumph of the bureaucrats of government of United States of America. It also helped NASA to develop its missile technology and system by acquiring many new and advanced techniques invented by US navy initially (Sapolsky H., n.d.).
