Part One: Philosophy of Nursing Education
Nursing is a profession which is considered to be the healing energy of caring. The goal of nursing is to interact with others in such a manner that it nurturers human health. The knowledge required for nursing includes empirical ethical, personal, and spiritual. Nursing is widely recognized as a traditional profession which functions great in the atmosphere of change. Change is considered to be essential for the survival and development of nursing profession. The element of change has been observed in different areas of nursing including clinical practice, nursing education, and management (Biesta, 2010).
Pragmatism is the philosophy of nursing. The philosophy originated in America in the middle of the century. It was the time when metaphysical philosophy was losing its grounds. The reason for the declined importance of metaphysical philosophy was its failure to make any difference to the way people lived. The origin of Pragmatism dates back to the work of John Dewey in the year 1938 and 1956. The theories of Dewey were very effective and his philosophy was concerned with the usefulness of knowledge (Nagle et al, 2009). The instrumentalism of Dewey influenced the way education was delivered. The philosophy emphasized the importance of direct action as the most important form of experience. Dewey also originated the term progressive education that emphasized on equipping students with the knowledge and ability to solve problems. The philosophy of Dewey shifted the focus of education away from banking education which involves acquisition and memorization of information (Murray et al, 2008).
According to Peters (2007), Pragmatism is an action-oriented philosophy of science. The philosophy of pragmatism studies the association between truth and action as well as practice and theory. According to the definition of pragmatism, it is the doctrine which suggests that reality possesses practical character. According to the arguments of pragmatists, the world is a set of practical actions which are born from thinking. The key area in pragmatic thinking is the concept of truth. For an extreme pragmatist, the truth is relative while the reality is probabilistic. Ardalan also maintains that for a true pragmatist, structural relationships are contingent. The process of inquiry begins where individuals no longer believe in their internal views and endeavor to acquire something new.
