Introduction

Leadership at all levels requires the exhibition of some special characteristics to be successful in this role. Some people are naturally born leaders while some require the learning of the skills and techniques to lead. Leadership in the field of nursing also has some requirements and can be learned. Apart from the clinical procedures that are necessary to be good at their jobs, learning of effective communication with people they encounter in their job such patients and families, taking instructions and following them, they also need to learn to lead. These skills are usually taught at nursing schools yet they are quite essential to be learnt for their progress in the field. The Bible provides many examples of leadership in the narratives of different leaders which can provide nurses with some characteristics that leaders need to have to be able to lead people successfully.

In the profession of Nursing, leadership skills are essential since nurses also lead the patients out of the illness into wellness and families out of confusion into an atmosphere of understanding. Leadership skills are also required when they have to train or lead new nurses in the profession. Good leadership in nursing requires development of good personal leadership skills. This requires that a person has to learn these skills from various sources. Bible is one of the sources that relate accounts of different world changing leaders from which we can learn different lessons of how can one be effective leaders. One of the best examples of this type of leadership in the Bible is that of Joshua. He was an exemplary figure not only for the people of his time but also provides an example of what constitutes a great leader in any age. To take inspiration from his leadership it is important to know about what how he led his people as narrated in the Bible.

Biblical narrative of Joshua

The story of Joshua in the Bible is one that is incredible. Successor of the famous leader Moses, Joshua is the Bible's most famous warrior (BBC). As Moses' companion, he was a major figure in the events of Exodus and was one of the spies sent by Moses to report on the land of Canaan. The way he led the conquest of Canaan provides examples of his leadership skills.

The Bible mentions the story of the walls of Jericho which is one of the most violent episodes in the Bible. From this place begins the securing of the land of Canaan. The land is in the Middle East with Joshua and his army planning an attack to the north east of the Dead Sea. The Bible states this to be the region that God pledged to Abraham and his descendants. With an army of many thousands of men, Joshua leads them to the country that is inhabited by Canaanites.
