New South West Police Force

Introduction

The primary law enforcement agency in Australia is the NSW Police Force. The state of NSW has only this law there. The government of NSW has this agency only in the entire state. The agency is divided in to eighty local area commands. The NSW Police Force covers an area of approximately 801,600 square kilo meters through five hundred local police stations and serves a population of around seven million people.

The department was formally established back in 1862 under the Police Regulation Act. All the departments which were existed within the NSWwere united as one under this act and title. Inspector General of Police had the authority and was responsible for the entire department.

The most chaotic period for the NSW Police was the period of 1990s. At that time the Royal Commission into the NSW Police Service was held in the years 1995 to 1997. During this time many police officers were caught involved in illegal and shameful acts of money laundering, bribery, falsifying evidence and also drug trafficking. Proper evidence was found of these crimes being committed by the police officers. Tony Lauer, a Police commissioner resigned because of these shameful acts and their evidences became clear. Lauer's own position as a police commissioner became very weak (McGinness, 2003).

Their Mission and their Authority

The NSW Police Force believes in the motto in when someone commits a crime the punishment soon follows. They say in Latin that “Culpam Poena Premit Comes” which literally means that punishment soon follows after the crime. This statement is also present on the uniform of the Police officers of New South Wales. The emblem has a coat of arms where this statement is written which also depicts a Wedge-tailed eagle that is carrying a scroll with Nemesis written on it. It also has a garland and a crown. The crown is of St Edwards which is the crown of the Queen of Australia. This is a representation of the Queen's Government (McGinness, 2003).

This symbol was used for the first time in 1959. A South Pacific Police Commissioners Conference was held back then where all the commissioners who had attended were given reserved tables and each had their names placed on it. This was designed for a first time use by detective Norm Merchant who was also a Sergeant. This symbol was then adopted as the official symbol for the NSW Police Force.

The main mission for this police department is to protect the property and the community of the state as well as raise the revenues by protecting businesses from crimes. The services that are provided by the NSW Police Force are many. But apart from the general protection they also work for preventing crime form happening. They also detect the crimes committed and also investigate. These three services are usually done by different departments all over the world but the NSW Police Force does it themselves.
