Movement from the City-States to the large imperial Estates
Introduction
Movement from the City-States to the large imperial estates has been a major trend in the history. City-states are independent territories with their own laws and government, while empires are the political and military dominated governments which acquire several neighboring and far flung territories through power. However, the cultural, religious and ethnic values of the different regions of the empire contradict from the ruling authority.
The main reason of the formation of the empires in the Mediterranean Basin and Near East is the expansion and control through military power (Steele, p.4). Initially, the regions had several city-states, which had their own values, but, later due to security threats and coercion they were turned into large imperial empires. In this assignment, I am going to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of city-states and Empires with evidence and Historical facts.
Advantages and Disadvantages of City-States
A city state is an independent city with its own independent rules, laws and customs. The surrounding boundaries, farms and towns, come under the territory of city states. Ancient Greece was divided into several city states. The biggest advantage of city states is that it increases patriotism. For instance, the people of Greece always labeled themselves with their City-States. They will always say that they belong to Athens, Sparta, and Thebes, but will not label them with Greece.
One major advantage of City-State is that, despite the difference in laws, customs and traditions, they have same beliefs, customs and religion. Their cultural and traditional values were similar, due to which they had a strong understanding. For instance, during the Persian Wars, all of the independent states fought together for the protection of Greece (Nisbet, p.30).
