Risks of Wireless Technology

The benefits of wireless technology are also dangerous if not protected. Introduction to Information Systems: Supporting and Transforming Business by Rainer and Cegielski describes four major threats to wireless technology. The first threat is rouge access points. An employee creates a wireless access point to connect to the company's network. The wireless network (if unprotected) can be accessed by anyone using a hot spotter—“a device that detects wireless networks and provides information on them” (Rainer & Cegielski, 2011, p. 266). The attacker will access information about the company. The attacker using rouge access points will create an evil twin attack. Once the attacker has gained access to the company network through a hot spotter the attacker creates a 'look-a-like' webpage. The web page will then ask employees of the company to verify or input confidential information (Rainer & Ciegielski, 2011). The second major threat to wireless security is war driving. Just like McDonald's free Wi-Fi people can access the network to obtain a free Internet connection or retrieve important information from the company (Rainer & Ciegielski, 2011). The third threat is eavesdropping. Information sent wirelessly can be accessed through special programs. Attackers will see information that is sent between co-workers within the company (Rainer & Ciegielski, 2011). The fourth major threat is radio-frequency (RF) jamming. As the term describes, a person can block or restrict information sent between departments. This can cause losses of information and roadblocks within the company (Rainer & Ciegielski, 2011).
