Biography of Michelangelo

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born during the late Renaissance period in Florence, Italy, on March 6, 1474. Michelangelo was quite young when his father handed him over to a stone cutters family. At a very early age his mother got ill, therefore he couldn't spend much time with her. The life of Michelangelo was quite interesting, and because he spent his childhood with the stone cutters, he developed a passion for cutting away at stone.

Michelangelo was sent to Florence to study grammar with Humanist Francesco da Urbino. He possessed no interest in schooling, and he rather preferred the company of painters and copied paintings from the churches. Painter Domenico Ghirlandaio, had appointed Michelangelo as an apprentice, when he was only thirteen. De facto ruler of Florence, Lorenzo de' Medici, had asked Domenico Ghirlandaio to send two best pupils, and Michelangelo was the one to be sent. Humanist Academy, was attended by Michelangelo, and under Bertoldo di Giovanni, he studied sculpture. Michelangelo's art and outlook were influenced by the most prominent writers and philosophers, namely; Pico della Mirandola, Poliziano, and Marsilio Ficino. Although Michelangelo asserted that he was self-taught, one might see in his work the advantage of such artists as Leonardo, Giotto, and Poliziano. The reliefs Battle of the Centaurs and Madonna of the Steps, were sculpted by Michelangelo in (1490-1492). Michelangelo was struck on the nose by Pietro Torrigiano, when he was 17-year-old, and his disfigurement had become very prominent in all his portraits. Michelangelo had a fantastic career, he was an all rounder. He was a gifted painter, sculptor, architect, engineer and a poet, but he chose to sculpt and paint out of all those. Several of his paintings have been painted at Sistine Chapel. The art of Ghiberti was also liked by Michelangelo. Michelangelo had a lot of interest in science and nature, and he much of his work depicted life.

Michelangelo possessed a special style, and he painted people usually. Michelangelo had lived in the time when Italy was going through renaissance. The arts and science had flourished in that period. Humanism and religion were also at their boom. These advancements had an impact upon Michelangelo's paintings and other work. Life had been a major part of his paintings and sculptors. Most of the people he drew were nude men, his work also depicts biblical art and 'David' is one of the best examples of it. Michelangelo's David is a representation of conquering hero, standing with confidence.
