Introduction

This paper intends to discuss the historical background settings of the novel Macbeth. William Shakespeare wrote Macbeth in 1606. For the purpose of understanding the essence of Macbeth, it remains extremely important to analyze the political context in which it was written. The political context of that period remains the most important theme of the play. The basic theme of the play revolves around the fact that excessive ambition ends up with terrible consequences. The purpose of this paper is to make the reader aware about the settings of Shakespeare's work against another body of material, such as details on social background or political views based on the novel Macbeth.

The political context of Macbeth remains extremely important to understand. Shakespeare wrote Macbeth in 1606 with an aim to make the readers aware about the fact that sometimes excessive ambitions result in terrible consequences. Several plays were written for the theatre for the reigns of two monarchs in the form of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. the first play that Shakespeare write was about the reign of Queen Elizabeth where people witnessed the positivity of different modes of Queen Elizabeth (John, 2008 Pp. 50-75).

Shakespeare wrote Macbeth during the reign of James depicting more darker and cynical side of the society. At that time, Shakespeare was at the height of his creative powers. The play seems to be extremely violent. The story of psychotic killer reveals significant facts related to the reign of King James. Macbeth seems to convince his audience through committing the multiple homicides. Without the proper knowledge of historical background of the play, the understanding of several passages and references remain extremely difficult to understand by the audience. The historical background also has to reveal the quality skills of Shakespeare to twist the history to make a better play for the purpose of addressing the political agendas of King James (Anonymous, n.d. The play also reveals important facts related to the English politics and society of that time. Macbeth can be considered to be a completely political play. Being able to successfully depict the history, Macbeth is based on the events in the life of a real figure related to the history; however, the tragedy within the play seems to be more powerful and significant. Shakespeare did not consider his audience to refer towards history as science. He believed that history has a purpose to raise the morals of the prevailing society. Moreover, Shakespeare suggested that history can be manipulated or created for the purpose of supporting various political agendas.
