Background and Motivation of My Student

My leaner's name is Kajean, a 24 year old French student currently on holiday here in England. He lives in the capital of France, so he is used to the hustle and bustle in big cities like London. His motivation for moving to London is solely to learn the English language. He intends to move to England and look for a job upon the completion of his degree. “I want live in England when finish my school”. Kajean has been living in London now for two months. He says he lives in the Wimbledon area in London.

His Previous Learning Experiences

Kajean is a student of Masters in France; he is currently studying for a Masters degree in corporate finance. He pointed out that his previous study in English has focused entirely on grammar and they were not given the opportunity to learn English in a communicative manner.

He further clarified that he is encountering difficulty at the moment in participating in communicative activities in class and would like to expose to such activities so as to better his communicative skills.

He noted that as perfect teacher is someone who spends more time on activities that are interactive, communicative and engaging. “I think is much important that teacher make us talk in class.”

He pointed out that his previous study of the English language was grammar focused. He had no opportunity to learn English through the communicative or humanistic approach. English language was taught in an analytical manner and the medium of instruction was the French language.

“It is a sad thing, the consequences is that I cant's speak English well, afraid to speak when I got to bank or at the swimming pool with friends.”

Kajean explained that when it comes to correction of his mistakes in class, he could prefer the teacher to step back a little and allow him the opportunity to speak fluently with little or no interruption. This is because he hardly speaks the language outside school, he has very few friends to talk with and practice his English.

I have observed that my student is reluctant to participate in class activities, which are intended to make him speak and contribute ideas on a given topic with his peers. He is always nervous and uncomfortable while speaking to his classmates. What is surprising is that Kajean follow class instructions perfectly. He understands the language is quite ...
