Literary Essay and Short Story

Introduction

There are two major categories of material in English literature, poetry and prose. Poetry makes extensive use of artistic and rhyming sequences, thus providing the reader with a taste quite different from that of prose. Prose, on the other hand, uses unadorned text in order to explain things and facts. Extensive explanations can be presented in prose, while poetry utilizes slightest words in order to describe complex phenomenon and draw a complete picture of the scene.

There are different categories of prose, depending upon the techniques and procedures used for expression along with the factors that can be described in any one type. For instance, some types of literature are suitable for description of scenes and ambiance while others can provide a better explanation of feelings and nature of relations.

Prose is further divided into two main categories: fiction and non-fiction. As evident by the name, fiction deals with imaginary and made up situations, dealing with circumstances that are a product of the imagination of the writer and aims at triggering the imaginative skills of the reader. Fiction usually involves extensive descriptions, as the writer intents to transfer his mind images into the mind of the reader. Fiction is there for leisure reading and provides a reasonable time pass to the readers it contains entertaining stuff and light topics, which refresh the mind and release tension. Nonfiction, on the other hand, is directly the opposite of fiction. It contains detailed accounts of the factual material, including informative and reveling essays and news articles. Nonfiction is there for enlightening and increasing knowledge of the reader, and unlike fiction, it is not just meant for leisure reading. Another major difference between the two categories of prose is fiction deals with the expressions of feelings, sentiments and various situations while nonfiction is about evidences and description of the phenomenon and things that are present, in contrast to the explanation of non-existent and bizarre stuff.
