Introduction

An Eco-map is a graphic illustration of a family's links to persons and/or systems in their environment. It can illustrate 3 different dimensions for each connection (Child Welfare Manual).

The purpose of an eco-map is to identify and supports the needs of a family or a person as a whole. Not only this but eco-map also helps in identifying a person's psychological needs and functions and how his family, neighbors, friends and the overall community around him affects his state of mind and thinking. It is one the best model of its league and is used by many psychologists to understand and deal with their patients (Mattaini, 1993).

The client (This can be an individual or a family) is situated in the centre of the eco-map. They are depicted in the centre of the circle. Family connections are shown close to the distinctive symbol, while friends and community around the individual are shown comparatively far. These systems are connected to either individuals or the entire circle by line (http://psychology.wikia.com).

Thicker (darker) lines mean stronger relationship.

Curvy or red lines mean that the system is an uneasy relationship.

Arrows pointing to the client mean that the system for the most part influences the client.

Arrows pointing to the system mean that the client for the most part influences the system.

Arrows pointing both directions depicts a two direction flow of influence.

Here, I would be applying assessment and intervention model/theory on the main character of the movie “Lars and the real girls”, Lars Lindstrom. Lars Lindstrom is suffering from a delusional disorder where he gets a friend with a DOLL and names it Bianca (www.imdb.com). How and why he did this and what were the situations that made him suffer from this order will be discussed in detail below. Furthermore, the role of his family members and the people around him will also be discussed for proper analysis and application of eco-map.

Discussion

Lars Lindstrom is socially isolated and rarely meets people around him. This is why his eco-map is rather small as compared to others because his interaction with people and community around him is every limited. I would first study Lars Lindstrom current situation and then assess his current position to develop strategies and ways to cure his Trauma. However, how Lars Lindstrom got cured in the movie will also be discussed here.
