ABSTRACT

Over the past years, and presently, there have been tremendous increase in online transactions; people find it easy and more convenient to transact and do their shopping online. For instance, activities such as banking, payment (bills and debts), studying (including learning and examination) and many more can be done online. However, increase in online transactions has been accompanied by a rise in the numbers and types of attacks against website security of online payment systems. Any merchandise or web developer who opens an ecommerce website should be concern about the website security especially in the processing of credit cards and protection of sensitive customers' information. The security of the ecommerce website falls on the site owner because any fraudulent transaction on the website will: lead to direct financial loss to the website owner, bad publicity, which will lead to loss of market share if customer's confidence is lost by DoS (denial-of-service) attack and criminal charges if the website owner is found guilty in breach of the data protection or other e-commerce regulation. Despite the security threats associated with ecommerce websites, websites designed using open source content management system can be used to minimise the risk of attack. Two popular and outstanding secured open source content management systems are: Drupal and Joomla. Drupal over the past years has tremendously improved the security features of their application and also, publish security resources for their users. Joomla on the other hand has undergone series of transformation especially Joomla 1.6 and security issues are properly addressed. According to Bensoro (2009), “Drupal and Joomla are well known and seems to be the most secured open source content management system”; and this project will evaluate the security features between both open source ...
