Is God Needed to Explain the Origins of the Universe?

Introduction

The debate of how the universe was created is as old as the intellectual development of man. We have heard various philosophies and doctrines regarding the creation of our universe from hundreds of philosophers, theologians and spiritual leaders. The latest claim has been put forward by a renowned scientist, Stephen Hawking, who has recently claimed that science has reached a point where one does have to believe in existence of God to explain and explore the origins of our universe. However, there are numerous arguments in favor of existence of God, including the famous Cosmological Argument. The research paper focuses on the Hawking's argument in light to the previous Cosmological Philosophy of William Rowe.

Hawking's View

Stephen Hawking, who is a famous British scientist, claimed in his work, The Grand Design that the Big-Bang phenomena were an unavoidable outcome of the laws of physics, that theories related to the creation of the universe by God have become redundant figure of a creator. The book, which was launched by the British newspaper, The Times, claims, “Since there is a law like gravity, the universe could create itself-and indeed it did, out of nowhere. Spontaneous creation is why there is something, that there is a universe that we exist.” Therefore, he adds, “it is not necessary to invoke God” for its creation. Stephen Hawking further added, “Science does not leave much room for miracles or God” (White & Gribbin, 2002, pp.52).

In his most popular work, A Brief History of Time (A Brief History of Time), a text of disclosure about the universe and its evolution, Hawking, internationally recognized theoretical physicist for his contributions to cosmology, black holes and quantum gravity, suggested that “if we discover a complete theory, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason because then we would know the mind of God” (White & Gribbin, 2002, pp.56) Hawking's argues that just as Darwinism abolished the requirement for a maker in the field of biology, fresh theories of physics make superfluous the function of a maker of the universe.

The new arguments presented by Hawking are contradictory to his previous philosophy about religion. He earlier argued that explanation of laws of physics does not mean that Big Band was an independent phenomena and God did not intervene in Big Bang process. However, in his latest book, Hawking's has presented a new philosophy that science has progressed enough to ignore the premise of existence of God. His new philosophy is based on the discovery of extrasolar star, which was discovered in 1992. This discovery helped him in dismissing the view of Isaac Newton that the universe was not a result of chaos and God was behind the creation of the universe.

Images displayed in "The Grand Design", represent evolution with respect to what the British scientist had written on the subject in "History of Time" (1988), suggesting that there is no incompatibility between the notion of God, as creator, and a scientific understanding of ...
